We have compiled a list of frequently asked questions. If your question is not listed below, please feel free to contact us.

What types of X-ray CTs does RPV have and what are their features?

The types and main features of our X-ray CT scanners are as follows

(1) Custom-made micro CT scanner (230KV): Toshiba IT Control Systems, Inc.
16-inch FPD (Flat Panel Detector): Spatial resolution: 5μm (Matrix size = 1024 pixels)
Scannable sample: Size Φ500 x H700mm Weight: up to 20kg
Features: Suitable for extracting fine defects.
Can be used for large samples.
It can scan the geometry of specimens made of rubber or resin or relatively small specimens.

(2) Industrial CT scanner, special order (450KV): Toshiba IT Control Systems, Inc.
MFP with both a line sensor and a 16-inch flat panel detector (FPD)
Line sensor: Spatial resolution: 200μm
FPD: Spatial resolution: 200 μm (matrix size = 1024 pixels)
Scannable sample: Size Φ600 x H800mm Weight: up to 100kg
Features: Suitable for scanning metal and large sample geometries.
It can be used for samples that cannot be penetrated by the 230KV micro-CT.

What is the most effective use?

(1) We want a 3D model that faithfully reproduces the internal structure that can be used for computer simulation.
High-definition 3D models are created by utilizing an appropriate CT scanner.
It also creates 3D models reproducing internal defects that can be output by a 3D printer and used for defect analysis.

(2) I want data that visualizes internal defects in an easy-to-understand 3D format.
3D movies and detailed reports provide data that enables the location and distribution of defects to be grasped at a glance.

(iii) The company owns an in-house CT, but the orderly waiting list is long.
For internal quality observation, we can prepare data within 3 days after receiving the sample.
For reverse engineering, it takes about 5 business days to STL, and about 4 weeks to CAD.
For more information, please contact us.

(4) We have in-house CTs, but we don't have time to work on 3D creation and analysis.
We also accept requests for 3D modeling and analysis only.

(5) We are planning to purchase a CT in the future and would like to know what kind of things we can do with a CT. We would also like to know the types and configurations of CTs that match the purpose of our purchase.
Before purchasing a CT, the customer is provided with reference data that matches the possibilities and needs of the CT he or she intends to purchase.

(6) Others I want to investigate whether a competing product from another company infringes on my patent. We have received a complaint from a business partner to whom we have delivered a product, and we want to clear our name.
After conducting thorough interviews, we will prepare clear data based on the facts.

Not sure if it is scannable by X-ray CT.

Please send us as much information as possible about the sample you wish to scan, including dimensions, material, and a photograph of the sample. RPV will respond to you as soon as we receive the information, and in some cases, RPV will perform a free trial scan if the scan is too sensitive or if we need to match your image with ours. After reviewing the data, you may decide whether to commission the service or not.

What materials can be scanned?

Materials that are easily penetrated by X-rays are good at X-rays and materials that are difficult to penetrate are poor at X-rays.

(1) Materials we specialize in: rubber, resin, aluminum, etc.

(2) Materials that are difficult to work with: lead, iron, copper, titanium, etc. (possible if the X-ray transmission distance is within 30 mm)
Please consult with us if the X-ray penetrates iron, copper, etc., which are difficult for X-rays to penetrate (distance to allow X-rays to penetrate is 30 mm or more).
It may also be possible to scan a combination of the above different materials, such as resin and steel, and it may be possible to separate the data into segments.

What is the size of the material that can be scanned?

(1) 230kv micro CT
Scanning area: φ500mm, H=700mm (H=approx. 900mm for vertical composite)

(2) 450KV high output CT
Scanning area: φ600mm, H=600mm (H=approx. 900mm for vertical composite)

How accurate is it?

Accuracy depends on the resolution of the x-ray CT scanner and the size of the specimen to be scanned.
The resolution of our X-ray CT scanner is as follows

(1) Micro CT Scanner (230KV)
FPD: Spatial resolution: 5μm (Matrix size = 1024 pixels)

As a rough guide, for example, the theoretical accuracy of a sample 20 cm in size when scanned with a 230 KV micro CT is 200 mm ÷ 1024 ≈ 0.2 mm/1 pixel.

(2) Industrial CT Scanner (450KV) High Power CT
Line sensor: Spatial resolution: 200μm
FPD: Spatial resolution: 200μm

What applications can it be used for?

1. create 3D data (STL format) that reproduces the internal structure
1) Reverse engineering of automotive parts (creation of 3D models for CAE)
(2) Shape comparison in 3D with CAD blueprints
(3) Creation of data for modeling with a 3D printer

2. identify defects (caves, cracks, etc.) in three dimensions
(1) Internal quality evaluation of aluminum die castings, etc.
(2) Observation of defect extraction and weld penetration in the weld area

What kind of data will I receive?

All cross-sectional images in X, Y, and Z directions
Video (RPV editing)
Analysis report (defect extraction and volume, etc.)
STL data (conversion from CT data only)

For details, please refer to the “Services” page and the “Sample Download of Deliverable Data” page.
Separate costs will be incurred for STL data → CAD conversion.

What is the format of CAD data for measurement to be deposited in RPV?

Please use STL or IGES or STEP format.
We will return your data as soon as the work is completed and will not keep it in the company.

Can I request only analysis, 3D modeling, and CAD?

If you have CT data, we can provide only 3D defect analysis and 3D modeling. Of course, we can also provide only CAD data.

Can we discuss the details?

Our technical sales staff regularly visit the Kanto and Kansai areas, We can arrange a meeting at your desired date and time.
The frequency of visits is about twice/month in both the Kanto and Kansai areas.

Can I visit and witness the RPV?

We can also arrange for you to come to our office for on-site analysis and data preparation.
Since CT scans require a certain amount of time, please send us your specimens in advance so that we do not have to wait for you at the time of the visit.

Can I use scanned 3D models as blueprints?

A scanned 3D model contains the tolerances of the product. In addition, errors occur when converting the data, so they are not suitable as blueprints for the purpose of manufacturing products. If they are to be used as blueprints, they need to be corrected or modified by a professional engineer.

Can you provide rental support for CT equipment?

We are sorry, but we do not support rental of CT equipment.
